An Infantry Battalion is made up of three rifle companies, a Support Company and a HQ Company. Commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel. There may be various different Battalions in a single Regiment. eg. The Parachute Regiment has 3 regular and one TA battalions
A Battalion sized unit of tanks is called an Armoured Regiment in British Army service because ... it just IS all right.
Other Arms of service are often organised into administrative Battalions but deploy as small groups to support teeth arms.
